Founder Q&A: Why We Created SPF Application Brushes - Thoughtfully Designed for Mineral SPF

At Solara Suncare, we’ve always believed sun protection should feel like a ritual, not a chore. That philosophy is what led us to launch our SPF application brushes, tools designed to make applying sunscreen more intentional, more enjoyable, and more seamless as part of your daily skincare routine. Rather than reinvent sunscreen itself, we wanted to improve the experience of applying SPF, especially mineral formulas, so that consistency becomes easier and more natural. We sat down with Solara Suncare’s Founder and CEO Stephanie DiPisa to learn more about this exciting launch.

Q: What inspired you to create SPF application brushes?
A: I’ve always believed that SPF is only as effective as the way it’s applied. Over time, I noticed that most brushes were designed for makeup, not sunscreen, and mineral SPF formulas have very specific textures and application needs. These brushes weren’t meant to create a new category, but rather to thoughtfully evolve the SPF ritual and make daily sun protection feel more intentional and elevated.

Q: Why apply SPF with a brush in the first place?
A: Application style matters more than people realize. With mineral sunscreen especially, the goal is even distribution across the skin’s surface. A flat-top brush allows you to press product into the skin instead of dragging it across the surface, which can help reduce streaking, patchiness, and pilling when layering skincare or makeup. It also creates a smoother, more skin-like finish. This is something our closest celebrity makeup artists do, so we wanted to bring that concept to everyone!

Q: Does this replace applying SPF with your hands?
A:  Reapplication is where most people fall off track, especially when they’re wearing makeup. A brush allows you to gently press SPF into the skin, without disrupting what’s already underneath. It makes touch-ups more realistic and seamless for everyday life, which ultimately helps people stay protected. As a busy mom and founder, I’m always on the go, and I keep these brushes in my purse for easy on-the-go reapplication.

Q: Do you lose product when applying SPF with a brush?
A: Our brushes are densely packed and flat-topped to minimize absorption and instead distribute product across the skin. When used correctly, pressing rather than sweeping, product waste is minimal, similar to using a makeup brush. Always be sure you follow the FDA rule of thumb when it comes to how much lotion to use. 

Q: What was your overall goal when designing these tools?
A: More than anything, the goal was to help people enjoy applying their SPF. When the experience feels elevated and ritualistic instead of like a chore, people are more likely to use sunscreen consistently and use the correct amount. And consistency is what really protects your skin over time. Plus – we wanted them to reflect the vibrant fun energy of the brand that traditional makeup brushes just don’t :).
