How to Prep, Protect, and Glow Under the Sun

with Azul Villa

Living in Miami, the sun is always part of the plan — it’s also where I see the most damage happen, especially for acne-prone or post-treatment skin.

Breakouts that could have healed cleanly turn into dark marks. Post-facial or post-peel skin becomes more vulnerable than most people realize. And without the right protection, you can undo your results faster than you think.

This is the part of skincare people overlook: what you do after matters just as much as the treatment itself.

Here’s how I prep, protect, and support my skin so it actually improves — not regresses — under the sun.

1. Start Clean and Light—Let Your Skin Breathe Before You Layer

Before heading outside, I always start with a gentle, creamy cleanser to remove any overnight residue without stripping my skin. In Miami’s humidity, I skip heavy moisturizers entirely—instead, I reach for a light hydrating serum that absorbs fast and keeps my skin balanced without feeling heavy.

Pro tip: If you’re in a hot, humid climate, a serum-to-SPF routine is all you need. Your sunscreen should be doing more than just protecting—it should be part of your treatment

2. Make Your SPF a Skin Treatment—Not Just a Shield

This is where your SPF matters most — not just as protection, but as part of how your skin heals so you cannot afford to miss this critical step if you want the investment you made in a special treatment to matter. This is where the Guardian Angel Super Peptide Sunscreen Milk SPF 50 completely changed my routine.

After breakouts or treatments, like peels, skin is more reactive, exposed, and can be more prone to hyperpigmentation. The wrong formula can clog, irritate, or sit too heavy — while the right one actively clams and supports the skin while protecting it.

Guardian Angel, it gives you broad-spectrum mineral protection with Non-Nano Zinc Oxide—which sits on the skin’s surface to physically block UVA and UVB rays. But what makes it a true multitasker is what’s inside the formula beyond the SPF:

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4: A powerhouse peptide made up of 5 amino acids, clinically shown to stimulate collagen and elastin production. With daily use, it helps plump fine lines—meaning your sunscreen is actively working on anti-aging while you’re outdoors.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Strengthens the skin barrier, refines texture, and helps minimize hyperpigmentation—a must for anyone prone to dark marks from breakouts or sun exposure.

CoQ10 (Ubiquinone): A potent antioxidant that replenishes the skin’s natural energy at the cellular level. Studies show that when applied topically in a sunscreen, CoQ10 increases SPF stability and adds infrared protection—an extra layer of defense most people don’t even know they need.

Australian Superfruits (Kakadu Plum, Amla, Terminalia): A blend of Vitamin C-rich adaptogenic fruits with clinically proven free-radical scavenging and cell-energizing properties. These help fight oxidative stress from UV and pollution, giving skin a visible glow even on your most active days.

Pro tip: Guardian Angel is oil-free and cares kindly for acne-prone skin as well. It layers beautifully under makeup or wears perfectly on its own for a natural, dewy finish.

3. Your Eye Area Deserves Its Own SPF

I’m a few months away from turning 30, and I’ve started paying extra attention to my eye area—it’s the thinnest skin on your face and the first to show signs of aging, sun damage, and dehydration. For a long time, I used the same sunscreen on my face and around my eyes, which isn’t necessarily wrong—especially if you don’t have sensitive eyes. But when I discovered Solara’s Day Dreamer Super Peptide Eye Primer SPF 30, I realized there’s a real advantage to using a formula with specific actives designed for that delicate area including:

  • N-Prolyl Palmitoyl Tripeptide-56: Often referred to as a “botox peptide,” this advanced peptide helps visibly lift and smooth fine lines around the eyes, supporting the skin’s natural resilience over time.

  • Tremella (Snow Mushroom): A natural moisture magnet that holds up to 500 times its weight in water—delivering lightweight, long-lasting hydration that keeps the eye area plump without feeling heavy.

  • Green Coffee Oil: Energizes and tightens the skin around the eyes, helping reduce puffiness and brighten dark circles for an awake, refreshed look.

4. Post-Treatment Skin Needs Extra Sun Vigilance

I’m a big fan of professional facials—hydrafacials, chemical peels, microchanneling—but here’s what a lot of people don’t realize: after any exfoliating or resurfacing treatment, your skin is significantly more photosensitive — which means even small amounts of sun exposure can lead to pigmentation, irritation, or long-term damage if you’re not properly protected. That’s why having the right SPF in your post-treatment routine is non-negotiable.

This is exactly where mineral SPF shines. Non-Nano Zinc Oxide works as a physical barrier that reflects UV rays rather than absorbing them, making it the gentlest option for freshly treated, sensitized skin. Plus, the calming ingredients in Guardian Angel—like Allantoin and Bisabolol—help soothe post-treatment irritation while the Niacinamide actively works to prevent the dark marks that UV exposure can trigger on healing skin.

Pro tip: After a facial or peel, I apply Guardian Angel as the very last step of my routine—no makeup, no extra layers—and reapply every 3–4 hours if I’m outdoors. Don’t forget a wide-brim visor for that extra layer of physical protection. Your post-treatment glow deserves to be protected, not compromised.

5. Think of Sun Protection as Preventative Skincare—Not Just Summer Care

The biggest shift for me was realizing this: sunscreen isn’t just preventing damage — it determines whether your skin improves or regresses. It’s also the most effective anti-aging, anti-hyperpigmentation, and barrier-protecting product you can use. When your SPF also delivers peptides for collagen stimulation, antioxidants for free-radical defense, and niacinamide for barrier support, you’re not just blocking the sun. You’re building stronger, healthier, more resilient skin every single day.

That’s the philosophy behind Solara Suncare, and it’s why I carry them at Wairua Beauty. Their formulas are EWG Verified, vegan, cruelty-free, and reef-friendly—so you’re protecting your skin and the planet.
